Headline acquires ‘Britain’s Best Drives’ book

richard-wilson.jpg Headline has won a competitive pitch for the rights to ‘Britain’s Best Drives’, a six part series for BBC Four, produced by Twofour Broadcast.

Britain’s Best Drives comprises six of the best drives from the Fifties - routes that fifty years on still inspire and thrill Britain’s motorists. Whether it’s a B-road that winds dramatically along the coast of North Cornwall, a tour of the traditional seaside resorts and atmospheric moorlands of North Yorkshire, or a route around Walter Scott’s Trossachs, made famous by his ‘Lady of the Lake’, these are drives that are not just about getting from A to B. They are about the joy of discovering unspoiled villages and beautiful landscapes, of making frequent stops and getting to know the locals along the way. With guide book in hand, actor and presenter Richard Wilson will drive these routes in search of that illusive golden age of motoring and to make the experience all the more authentic, he’ll be behind the wheel of some classic cars of the period.

The book will be co-authored by Richard Wilson and award-winning travel journalist and author, Nigel Richardson.

Anthony Hughes, Commercial Director of Twofour comments :

“We are thrilled to be working with Headline, Richard and Nigel on the Britain’s Best Drives book. We’re very excited about the potential of this series and the book will be a fantastic accompaniment to it.”

Claire Potter comments :

“There was such a positive response from publishers to this project and we’re delighted that Headline won through to acquire the rights. Our job was made easier because we were blessed with two wonderful authors in Nigel Richardson and Richard Wilson, and a wonderful team at Twofour who have been a joy to work with.”

Andrea Henry, Publisher at Headline, comments :

“This is a lovely idea with widespread appeal not only to baby boomers but to classic car fans, those hankering after a bit of “things aren’t what they used to be” nostalgia and, of course, fans of Richard Wilson.”

Britain’s Best Drives is scheduled to be broadcast on BBC Four in January 2009. The deal was brokered by Claire Potter at Metrostar.
