‘Congratulations to the much-maligned Barmy Army. Their commitment, loyalty, good humour and wit are an inspiration to sports fans everywhere’
Stephen Fry
Formed by three friends during the 1994/95 Ashes tour of Australia, the Barmy Army is England’s largest and best-known supporters’ organization. With their outrageous costumes, vivid face paints, humorous songs and colourful characters such as Billy the Trumpet and Jimmy Saville lookalike Vic Flower, they bring a unique, carnival atmosphere to every match they attend.
Once pilloried by the media, the Barmy Army are now recognized as the greatest cricket supporters in the world. Far from being the lager-swilling louts of legend, they are a well-organized membership club whose sole purpose is to support the England team and make watching all forms of cricket more accessible and enjoyable for fans.
Via the website www.barmyarmy.com members can get priority tickets for England games, special offers on tour packages, the latest cricket news, a subscription to the Barmy Army Magazine, and much more. The Barmy Army are welcomed at grounds throughout the world, and prominent members such as co-founder Paul Burnham are increasingly sought for their comments by Sky Sports, Talksport, BBC Test Match Special and other media outlets.
Metrostar has recently brokered a three-book deal for The Barmy Army with Simon & Schuster. The first book, Everywhere We Went : Stories From The Barmy Army is written by Ben Dirs & Paul Burnham with contributions from Barmy Army members, cricketers and friends. It will be published in November 2011.
