‘Ashes to Ashes’ is the follow-up to the huge BBC police drama hit, ‘Life On Mars’. First screened on BBC One in January 2006, ‘Life On Mars’ attracted an average of 6.7 million viewers weekly, indexing well amongst ABC1 men aged 16-34. It followed the adventures of Sam Tyler, an ambitious police detective who is transported back in time to 1973 to work with a team led by DCI Gene Hunt, with 1970’s attitudes and 1970’s methods. Sam feels like a fish out of water but learns to come to terms with an unfamiliar environment and an archaic CID unit where lack of technology and outdated behaviour are the norm.
In ‘Ashes to Ashes’ Gene Hunt moves from Manchester to London and time moves forward to 1981. Everyone’s favourite politically-incorrect cop turns his attentions to taking on the ‘southern nancy’ criminal scum in the nation’s capital. Gene, however, does not expect to be thrown together with the sexy, intelligent, DCI Alex Drake. Single mother to daughter Molly, Alex has rapidly risen through the ranks of the Met. When Alex and her daughter are kidnapped, she makes a daring attempt at escape, resulting in a horrific accident. Alex suddenly finds herself in 1981 interacting with familiar characters, not just from her own life time, but also from the detailed reports logged by none other than Sam Tyler, which Alex has previously spent months poring over.
Ripped from her current world of sexual equality and respect, she finds herself faced with the boorish Gene in a two-tone, New Romantic, Eighties London with a soundtrack of Adam Ant, Roxy Music and The Human League ringing in her ears. Frustrated by each other’s stubbornness, the friction between Alex and Gene heats up. However, as the two titans collide, it becomes apparent there is more than just a professional tension emerging.
