Dear Zoo was published in 1982 and over the years it has become firmly established as a classic for the under 5’s. To celebrate the 25th anniversary, Rod Campbell refreshed the original artwork to give Dear Zoo an updated and fresh look, ready to delight a new generation of young readers!
A child writes to the zoo for a pet. The zoo send a series of unsuitable pets, revealed behind flaps in the form of crates and packing cases. These animals are all sent back for different reasons - the lion is too fierce, the camel is too grumpy, the monkey is too naughty and the frog is too jumpy - except the last one, a puppy, which is perfect!
Over 4 million copies of Dear Zoo have been sold. As well as the board book, there are pop-up books, colouring books, activity packs, hardback jacketed books, minature books and buggy book versions of this popular story.
There is also a Dear Zoo CD read by actress, Caroline Quentin.
Rod Campbell appointed Metrostar to represent Dear Zoo for licensing in 2009 with a view to extending the brand - particularly into product areas which work well for children's literary properties such as giftware, apparel, nursery, feeding, accessories and paper products. Given the 'early learning' aspect of the brand, we are also especially keen to develop Dear Zoo toys and games for young children.
Claire Potter comments :
Dear Zoo is one of the last pre-school classic books yet to be extended into new product areas and as such represents a unique opportunity for licensees. The zoo is part of every child's early years play set and the popularity of the Dear Zoo book gives licensees a super property with which to create imaginative and playful products for babies and toddlers.
A Dear Zoo style guide is currently being developed with Marshmallow Creative.
