The Great British Bake Off is a television baking competition for amateur bakers - designed to test every aspect of their baking skills as they battle to be crowned the Great British Bake Off’s best amateur baker.
Their efforts are judged by renowned baking writer Mary Berry and professional baker Paul Hollywood. Presenting the show are Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, who also trace the very particular history of British baking by visiting local baking landmarks and discovering why people bake what they bake today.
Series two, screened on BBC Two from August to October 2011, firmly established 'Bake Off' as major television series. Over 5 million people watched the final episode in which Jo Wheatley became the current 'Bake Off' champion. Further 'Bake Off' television series are planned for 2012.
The Great British Bake Off has already proven an exceptional commercial success. The book from series one (Penguin) has sold in excess of 150,000 copies and the book for series two (BBC Books) has already sold over 250,000 copies. BBC Books has acquired the rights to publish tie ins to series 3 and series 4.
Metrostar has also brokered deals with Ethos International for cookware, Portico for calendars and diaries, Quadrille for stationery, PBFA for Marks & Spencer giftware and BBC Haymarket Exhibitions for consumer shows. Metrostar is looking for further licensee and retail partners for 'Bake Off' in related areas such as ceramics, melamine, partwork publishing, white goods, partyware, greetings cards and baking ingredients.
Junior Bake Off, also by Love Productions concluded its first succesful series on CBBC in 2011. A style guide is in development for this lively property and will be available to licensees soon.
