In Spring 2006, fourteen of the nation's finest chefs from seven regions competed to prepare the best of British cuisine in an eight week long contest that culminates in the creation of a four course menu voted for by the public. The chosen dishes were served to the Her Majesty the Queen and distinguished guests at the City of London's official lunch on 15th June to celebrate Her Majesty's 80th birthday.
Sourcing the best ingredients from their local area, each chef created a starter, a fish course, a meat course and a dessert that they believed epitomises all that's best about their beloved region.
The winning menu was created by chefs Richard Corrigan (starter), Bryn Williams (fish), Nick Nairn (Main) and Marcus Wareing (pudding).
Over 22 million viewers watched The Great British Menu during its 8 week run on BBC One and BBC Two. The BBC has commissioned a Christmas Special for December 2006 and another 8-week series for Spring 2007.
