Green Cross Man
Costumed superhero, Green Cross
Man was created in 1975 as part of a
government campaign to teach young
children to cross the road safely. British
actor David Prowse MBE, a bodybuilder
and former Mr. Universe (best known for
his portrayal of Darth Vader in the Star
Wars films) played the character in a
well-known series of Public Information
Films.

The Green Cross Man had the power
to teleport from his monitoring station
at Green Cross Control to any location
where kids are in need of pedestrian
safety instruction. He accomplished
this by use of a wristwatch-like “Dematerialiser” device.
Green Cross Code spots ran on UK
television channels from 1975 to 1990,
and the Green Cross Man was a
popular television character of the
age. His signature exclamation “Green
Crosses!” and his slogan is “I won’t be
there when you cross the road, so always
use the Green Cross Code” are fondly
remembered by British children growing
up in the 1970s and 80s.
Using the original 1970s ‘comic book
style’ artwork, Metrostar is interested in
talking with licensees in categories which
traditionally work well for retro-vintage
properties - such as apparel, giftware,
toys and games and greetings.
The National Archives, the UK’s
government’s official archive,
currently hosts three 1975 Green
Cross Man road safety films at
www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/films1964-1979. This online exhibition
of public information films is a unique
collaboration with the Central Office
of Information. Many more popular
characters are featured.
