Ten Secret Places
Peter Collyer is one of the most acclaimed landscape artists in Britain, producing incredibly detailed paintings which The Daily Telegraph described as ‘simply stunning, with an observed intensity which makes him very special indeed.' A Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, he has had numerous one-man shows in London galleries.
Since the late 1990s Peter has also been writing about his painting travels, starting with the award-winning Rain Later, Good (1998), the record of an extraordinary journey around the Shipping Forecast.
This was followed by three further books
on coastal themes, including Encompassing Britain (2002), published in association
with the National Trust’s Neptune Coastline Campaign.
Peter’s new book is represented by Metrostar and is a truly original idea. Ten Secret Places is a mystery tour of ten wonderful locations scattered across Britain, all of which have a personal significance to him. They range from a vast ruined mansion to a disused lighthouse; from an isolated hamlet, cut off by the tide, to an abandoned church; and from an ancient landscape littered with 25,000 giant stones to a fairytale castle hidden in a beech wood.

In each chapter Peter describes the unique qualities of each secret place, but it is up to the reader to work out where it is, by using the clues in the text, Peter’s sketches of the surrounding area and his detailed painting of the place itself that ends each chapter.
Readers can also take part in a quest to prove they have found all ten secret places by having their photograph taken in the exact spot depicted in the painting. They will then be entered into a draw to win a unique prize – a painting by Peter of their own favourite secret place. The quest will be launched at a special event at the time of publication, with the draw for the winner taking place a year from that date.
Whether you take up the challenge as a real or an armchair traveller, this unique book provides a thrilling journey across our island’s amazing and enigmatic landscape.
